Sanguine is a world-building project inspired by the aesthetics and storytelling of Arcane, Valorant, and Dishonored. It is designed to be both, an animated TV series and a third-person RPG game. It envisions a Neo-Victorian London where vampires thrive among the human populace, discreetly controlling the shadow economy. The contrast between the impoverished suburbs and the bustling, vibrant city center sets the stage for rich, atmospheric visuals that explore themes of power, survival, and the hidden underworld.
For this project, I designed the concept art of four characters, an environment, and two props.
Synopsis
In the heart of Victorian London, an elite unit known only as Order 369, comprised of handpicked soldiers renowned for their exceptional skills, readies itself for its most dangerous mission to date. Silas, a recent addition to the team, finds himself thrust into a world of darkness and deception as he joins his comrades under the command of the enigmatic Officer Verona.
Their mission: infiltrate a secret gathering of the elusive Vampire Council and neutralize the threat they pose to the city. However, as they set their plans into motion, the council remains elusive, and the unit soon finds themselves surrounded by a horde of lesser vampires. In a desperate bid for survival, they are forced into a frantic battle, with Silas realizing that he has become ensnared in a web of deceit and treachery far greater than he could have imagined...
Characters
CHARACTERS
Silas Fullmore
Designing Silas was challenging as I needed to convey his status as an elite soldier in Order 369 discreetly. Initially, I overemphasized the steampunk elements, making him too quirky. In the final design, I adopted a modern style with influences from Victorian-era British military uniforms, such as the iconic red coats.
Verona Kieran
Designing Verona was complex due to her role as a pure-blooded vampire blending within Order 369. Her design needed to hint at her hidden nature while remaining attractive. Her design direction was an elegant, dancer-like dress with a masochistic noble flair. Screaming elegance and grace but still functional enough for mobility.
Father Raphael
Father Raphael's design draws inspiration from the media stereotype of a mafia priest, reflecting his backstory as a veteran turned undercover priest. The challenge was to balance this with the Sanguine visual style. The final design uses Christian symbolism, including props like holy water, a Bible, and a coat, to emphasize his priestly role.
Queen Mother
For the Queen Mother's design, I focused on the keyword 'Ancient,' aiming to give her a look that transcends cultures, reflecting her thousands of years as an Elder Vampire. To emphasize her role as the ultimate antagonist, I ensured her silhouette stands out, reinforcing her presence as the formidable "big bad boss" but not too much as she is also the Queen of London.
Environment
Environment
Coppercrane
In my environment design, I decided to create a concept for a building within the port of London, as it effectively showcases the technological level within the world of Sanguine.
The building, Coppercrane, features a crane and a control tower integrated into its structure. It is intended for efficiently moving cargo between shore and ships. During the night, its purpose takes on a darker twist as vampires utilize it to transport human cargo.
Props
Props
Vampirebane
In my prop design, I focused on creating distinct concepts with different mechanisms and functions. Hence I decided to design both a range and a melee weapon where one emphasizes functionality while the other focuses on aesthetics.
Vampirebane, designed for Father Raphael, combines functionality with creative interpretation, envisioning how a handgun would fit within Sanguine. The bullets contain irradiated liquid that emits UV light to effectively eliminate vampires.
Regalfang
Regalfang, in contrast, is a prop focused on aesthetics. This ornamental dagger, gifted to Verona by the Queen Mother, emphasizes intricate design and elegance.
